Environment

We are committed to protecting the environment we work in

We aim to reduce the impact of our activities and always operate in a sustainable way; ensuring we preserve our environment for future generations. We do this by:

  • Ensuring a strict commitment to comply with all relevant environmental legislation, laws, codes of practice and industry regulations

  • Assessing the environmental aspects and impacts of all projects and jobs

  • Selecting products that have minimal impact on the environment, for example, water based bitumen emulsions and low hazard herbicides

  • Minimising waste and promoting re-use and recycling

  • Reducing CO2 emissions from energy and resource consumption

  • Working with suppliers and sub contractors who themselves have sound environmental policies

SWH promotes continuous improvement and operates a robust Environmental Management System which is accredited to ISO 14001, and independently audited regularly.

SWH is a member of the Exeter Carbon Club and has implemented a number of measures to reduce our energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. These include:

  • Specification of vehicles with low emissions and high fuel economy

  • Fitting movement detector switches and water saving devices throughout our offices and depots

  • Regular monitoring of energy, water and fuel consumption

  • Use of IT and Tracking systems to minimise vehicle movements and improve response times

  • Gradually replacing old IT equipment with energy efficient models

  • Adjusting photocopiers and printers to reduce power consumption, through the use of sleep modes and low power modes

  • Encouraging teleconference facilities to reduce vehicle movements
