Surfacing

SWH_Surfacing_in_Devon

Working closely with Local Authorities and private clients, SWH’s surfacing department specialises in highway maintenance, regularly completing schemes ranging from £5,000 to £500,000 and above

From asphalt materials to Hot Rolled Asphalt, we operate three permanent surfacing gangs and are experienced in the laying of a wide variety of modern surfacing materials. SWH is UKAS Sector 16 accredited; our fully trained workforce is equipped to work day and night. We offer clients the full package and can complete all associated works including white lining, signing, road planning, preparation and a full traffic management service.

We have a vast knowledge and experience of working in difficult environments where constrained site conditions dictate a specific method of working. We are experienced in working on major roads, and have recently completed schemes on the A38 and A30 trunk roads. We also work on minor and rural roads and are expert in working in busy town environments. This experience enables us to offer bespoke packages to clients, we will deliver each scheme from inception through to completion.

Our gangs are used to dealing directly with Client staff and members of the public. The department has its own Customer Liaison Officer who carries out client and public liaison which commences in advance of the works including carrying out letter drops to affected households and visiting local businesses, schools and organisations potentially affected by our works for larger schemes.

The Introduction of Agricultural Retread

SWH has introduced 'Agricultural Retread' an innovative recycled carriageway construction process for small to medium sized sites. It uses readily available, non-specialised plant and materials to reconstruct failing carriageways by recycling the existing surface into a revitalised homogenous pavement. The existing surface is down-milled to a depth of up up 75mm, additional planings and/or limestone dust is added together with new binder. This is then mixed into the mat with an agricultural powered harrow to ensure maximum distribution and penetration of the emulsion. After rolling, a second application of binder is followed by 14mm chippings to close surface voids. The last stage in the process is a coat of emulsion an 8mm all-in chippings.
